Effort – It’s Between You and You

Very good article on USA Today on Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens and motivational speeches. There are several good clips but the Ray Lewis one has a lot of great information. Here are a couple quick statements that were my favorite.

Oscar Pistorius – Truly an Inspiration

Oscar Pistorius of South Africa has accomplished something that no other athlete has.  As a double amputee runner, he not only qualified to run the 400 meters in the 2012 London Olympics but he made it to the 2nd round against able bodied runners. 

This feet is absolutely amazing to me.  He defies everything that we were taught growing up.  Someone who is missing the bottom half of his legs should not be able to run in the Olympics, but he did.  And he did it well.  He is truly an inspiration and I can’t wait to see what else he can do.  Check out this article on the Washington Post.

Accomplishing Your Goals

Mental Preparation – visualize yourself running your best time, scoring a career high, catching the game winning touchdown, etc. The more you visualize yourself accomplishing your goal, the more likely you will accomplish it. Do this over and over again until you’ve gone through every possible scenario and you will be prepared for anything.

Share it – share your goal with everyone you know. This will hold yourself accountable. Your friends and family will start asking you how your goal is going and if you haven’t been making strides toward it then you start wanting to prove to them that you can do it.

Post it – post it everywhere, such as your mirror in the bathroom, your computer monitor or your refrigerator. If you start to think about cheating or taking a day off then your goal is right there staring at you. Keep it mind that it’s good to take a day of rest every now and again but if it starts to become day 2, day 3 and so on then changes will need to be made.

Set a SMART goal – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely.

212 – the extra degree

At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive. One extra degree…..makes all the difference. That one extra degree of effort in business and in life separates the good from the great!

The average margin of victory for the last 25 years in all major tournaments combined for professional golf was less than 3 strokes.

At the Indy 500, the average margin for victory for the past 10 years has been 1.54 seconds. The average winner took home $1.3 million; the second place prize was $621,000 a difference of $679,000.

To get what we’ve never had we must do what we’ve never done. One extra degree of effort = doing another lap around the track, or doing one more pushup. That one degree makes all the difference in turning your hot water into boiling water. You are responsible for your results so make 2012 the year you give one extra degree!

Dolphin Tale, true story about Winter

Just saw the movie, “Dolphin Tale.” The true story about a dolphin named Winter who was rescued from Mosquito Lagoon near Cape Canaveral, FL. Unfortunately, her entire tail had to be removed from the damage she had received from a crab line. Most dolphins unfortunately die from that type of traumatic incident. But not Winter. She survived the rehabilitation despite the odds against her. Winter’s energy and ability to adapt to her new physical form has surpassed the expectations of many experts. Her story is one that can inspire us all. If you’re down, now is the time get moving. You can’t let the odds against you, stop your movement. The past is the past. Focus on the present and the future. Believe in your own abilities and nothing can stop you accomplish your goals.

Be Great, Powerful Beyond Measure

Fantastic inspirational video. How great can you be? Every night you dream of being the best. Every morning you wake thinking you’re the best. But along the way you start to doubt yourself. You starting thinking, “can I do this?” Yes you can! Go after your dreams, believe in yourself. Today is the day that you’ll be great. What you do today determines tomorrow. Dare to be great. Set SMART goals for yourself and achieve them.  Nothing in this life is out of your reach.  Stop being afraid of success.  Challenge yourself everyday.  Sure you’ll make mistakes but that’s the only way you’re going to learn.  Today is your day.

Being the best athlete you can be

I found this pretty inspiring video on being the best.  It got me thinking.  What does it take to be the best?  And not just the best athlete but the best at business, the best husband or wife, the best dad or mom.  It takes effort but not just once in a while effort.  In order to be the best you have to get up everyday and put this constant effort day in and day out.  But what does that mean?  You have to focus on the little things.  If you get up every morning and decide to do 100 pushups before work or school then that little effort over time will make you stronger.  If you get up and run 3-4 miles every morning then that little effort over time will make you more fit.  If you get get up and shoot baskets every morning then that little effort over time will make you a better a basketball player.  It’s doing the little things that matter the most and over time those little things will make you stronger, fitter and better than you’ve ever been.  Set a goal to wake up every morning and do one thing to put in the effort and see what happens.  Give it 12 weeks and I promise you it will make a difference.  Run 4 miles, do 500 pushups, shoot 100 free throws, swing your golf club a thousand times, read up on your sport and be the best athlete, spouse, person you can be.  Enjoy this video!
